GAOSP 3 : Android Gingerbread 2.3 for Samsung Galaxy I7500 (Preview)
GAOSP team is working to port Android 2.3 (Gingerbread – CyanogenMod 7) on Samsung Galaxy I7500. First for fun, but if it’s daily usable…why not.
Currently, GAOSP – Froyo is quite stable but we are very punctilious, and the project is still named “BETA3″. Most of features are working fine and the few one which are not working are not very important for most user (or very difficult to fix, like bluetooth headset). Every hours spent on each port, is used on next Android version, to save time. Froyo was much more stable than eclair, and we hope it will be the same for Gingerbread.

Main patch are applied, but some work is needed to fix some issue, and try to improve performances, if it’s possible. Gingerbread use a little more memory than froyo, and this is a huge problem for our lovely Samsung Galaxy I7500, when switching between applications.
One day, Samsung said Galaxy I7500 will never receive Froyo because of it’s hardware. Today, Samsung Galaxy I7500 eats a piece of Gingerbread.
So, this is a small video preview, showing the current status of GAOSP3 : Gingerbread. Please don’t ask when, or for a build, just be patient. We will give you some news soon.
Speak about this on the forum : http://www.drakaz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=11303

wow, that was fast, seems pretty usable already! you guys work really hard, thanks.
I see you’ve changed for Launcher Pro, does it have any advantages over ADW? Less RAM eaten. I guess?
Anyway, it’s exciting time for Galaxy again, this is getting really funny – this phone will have gigerbread before Galaxy S!

But I want honeycomb
:(:(
Haha, just kidding
It is amazing that you do this!
Thanks for all the great releases so far!

Guys this is a bad strategy !
I know it’s fun to work on the latest code, but you’ll get a much bigger audience (and many more donations !) if you just release something 100% usable ! Since we’re almost there for 2.2, I beg you to get the work done and release the final ! Something that Samsung would put on their mobiles !
Don’t get me wrong I think it’s great that you guys are doing this. But I’m a dude who wants to flash the mobile once and then do not think about it for the next 6 months or so. I don’t want to flash a new nightly every day, I want something robust ! and I guess I’m member of a big audience. I haven’t yet bought galaxy updater – nor have I made a donation, but I will on the day you release a final version and the comments in the forum are positive!
So please please checkout the 2.2 branch and make something rock solid !

I respectfully disagree. If I wanted to have something rock stable I guess I would have stayed with Samsung’s default F/W. I want bleeding edge. Go for Gingerbread!

Well, any news is a good news. Either Froyo or Gingerbread running on our Galaxy is a miracle already. We still remember how Sam*censored ditched this phone like a unwanted child. So go for it Drakaz & co. It’s always fun to do some experimenting and who knows what future brings.
Sam*censored sucks! Drakaz & co rulez!!! XD

You guys are amazing. I am truly impressed. Actually the only reason I may consider purchasing another Samsung phone is the amazing support Drakaz and his friends provide to this ill deserving company.
Keep up the good work.

Gaosp developers you rock! Thank you for this amazing project. Gingerbread on Galaxy, here we go! \o/
Samsung is a joke front of you.

Júlio.

I’d like to agree with #5
Partly, anyways. It is indeed absolutely amazing to see Gingerbread on the I7500 and a few weeks ago I’d have feeled like a total fool to even ask for it. Stunning work to see it up and running.
However, just as niconk already pointed out, flashing is fun, but I would be really happy to flash a really rock solid stable version. The latest nightly doesn’t crash that often but still it does from time to time (when switching radios) and is a little laggy when pulling up the contacts etc.
While I appreciate ALL work that is put into this project, I’m afraid those nasty little bugs are ignored over the fancy shining bleeding edge Gingerbread.
I’d happily donate again if I’d just know which direction this thing is going
Cheers!

Looks exciting,
I am nearing the end of the contract of my i7500 as it is 18 months old and it is time for a new phone. I want my next phone to be the same as Drakaz’s phone that way if it is as big a brick as the i7500 I know it can be saved, any idea what your next one will be?

Awesome work! Always nice to see devs be able to take a phone well above and beyond the expectations of the creators.

“Little visual difference, but I saw a brief improvement in the performance of applications and phone features. Congratulations to you, for making available these outdated versions of the i7500. Sure, when my license expires this app, I will buy again.” Google Translate =)

I agree with #5.
My phone is my communications tool; I talk with it, send SMSs, emails and manage my contacts and my calendar. A stable phone is essential so finishing the job you guys started is important, give us a stable Froyo.

Android 3.0 is now released. Are you going to trash all the good work done with 2.2 and 2.3 and jump into 3.0 code ?
You guys cannot compete with Google on release cycles. How many are they working in Android ? You are just 5 ‘gus in a garage’ if you know what I mean
Besides each new version has tougher hardware requirements and it makes it harder to use on older HW like the I7500.
Every day many people are just giving up on I7500 and buying a new phone because they want newer features. How eco-friendly is that ?
You can go on forever chasing the google rabbit, or you can just stick to a version and make it perfect.
Let this version be 2.3 then !
You are a great team, you just need to take the good decisions !

For Android 3.0 our Galaxy unit is to weak. I’m afraid Android 2.3 is maybe as far as it gets for it. So Froyo or Gingerbread is our only options, but Froyo still leads ’cause it’s in beta 3 stage and Gingerbread is in prealpha stage and it’s uncertain whether Gingerbread will be of daily use for us (running on decent speed).
Great work.. thank you so much.. but I’d rather have a stable froyo first!
I have no interest in Gingerbread and would REALLY like to see Froyo in a 100% usable release state. Right now, you been working on 3 different versions and have no usable version. There’s no point in jumping from one project to the next to the next, without ever completing one. The thing about Froyo is its faster and more efficient than any other android version, making it highly usable on the i7500. It has all the features anybody could need on Android. And therefore, it’s preferable to the Gingerbread. *Since you have almost got the Froyo done, PLEASE JUST FINISH THE FROYO!!!* You’ll be doing a big favor for the Galaxy community, and by the time it’s done, maybe Gingerbread will be a thing of the past, and you’ll be able to work on 2.4…
about 1 year ago
I rewrited the article because most of you just respond to it without thinking of what “100%” mean. Froyo is still a BETA 3 because we are very very punctilious, but Froyo is STABLE, a lot of users daily use it on their Galaxy.
We choose to speak about BETA3, but a lot of rom maker would named it “1.3″. For us, 100% mean the same work as samsung can do with a big team and a lot of money. A 100% working rom is just no possible for us. Remember, we are a little team, and we works in our free time.
We don’t move from version to another just to say “yeah we run the last version of android”, but to have a much more stable rom. Froyo was more stable than eclair, and currently, except memory issues, Gingerbread is much more stable than Froyo.
So, i understood your vision, and i’ll change mine.

Drakaz, thank you for the heartfelt response you posted to our comments. I’m part of the laypeople group who just wants a better phone experience than Samsung left us with when they EOLed the Galaxy. I’ve been watching the GAOSP project for about 9 months, and you’re right, what you’re doing is pretty amazing really. Last week, I finally felt it had progressed to the point that I decided to download the zips for the Froyo version. I still haven’t flashed them though, because I’m debating whether Froyo is worth possibly having a slightly diminished camera functionality. (Android really 1.5 sucks, but that Galaxy camera is a pretty nice cam.) I also have a G1 with CM6, but that phone’s memory is so small that it really doesn’t really work all that well, even with some of the files moved to the SD. The Galaxy is a much nicer piece of hardware, it’s clean-looking, and it deserves an upgrade. I really had no idea that your port of Gingerbread was more stable than the Froyo – so surprised to hear that. Maybe it’s worth trying out…

Hello Drakaz,
It’s amazing what you (and your team) do for free for so many people, considering the amount of effort required to code, debug, etc., not to talk about the required skills offered free of charge. You even chose to make it a ‘donate’ affair when you could make a fortune ‘selling’ the ROMs. How can we ever pay you for all this work.
Unfortunately, I cannot enjoy this benevolence; my device is a pre-release version (I7500XXID3, was gifted to me by a former Sam* employee) and all the update procedure don’t seem to work in my case. As it is, I am stuck with a buggy 1.5 beautiful device, and can only read about the joys of 2.2, and now 2.3. I just wish it was different. Or perhaps you could help me, please!!

The most we want is “Thank you for what you did for our lovely Galaxy “.The beta 3 is more stable than before. And we can have enjoy with it than before. We expect the next product from you .

Thanks for your great efforts with the roms guys! I’ve been couturious for a while now about a couple of things:
1. Would a one click lag fix or wodoo like patch(the kind like one for galaxy S) be possible for ths i7500?
2. I would suggest a screen filter like app to everyone. it reduces backlight well beyond built in settings which is perfect in darkness and saves battery.
3. How could I completely lock any launcher into memory completely so it couldn’t force close?

Any hope for my case, Drakaz?

@Anthony
Did you try using ODIN to install 1.6 firmware (JC6)?

@ Lelouch, I tried Odin, but got an error message saying something to the effect that ‘partition size was large.’ Not with JC6 tho’. Will fetch JC6 and try again, and report the status here. Thanks

Which size is your internal SD card?
Did you try formatting your internal SD card?
P.S: this problem you should have asked on the forums, and not here. So go on the forum and ask there. There’re also some people there who will give you a good advice regarding your “specific” problem. So register if you didn’t already and ask.

I too am VERY interested in whether a GALAXY S like lag fix would be possible on the 7500.It really completely changes the galaxy s into a very smooth device and it uses its internal storage for a 1 gig partition.
I tried to use the one click lag fix app from market I used on a galaxy s on the 7500 but it does not apply ig.could it be adapted to the 7500?

I think going for 2.3 and waiting a little more is way more better than getting 2.2.
I don’t want to spend any more money to buy another phone just to play stupid 3d child games.
I7500 will be with me at least for the next 2 years.
